Award-winning Fish and Chips

"Nardini's" in Largs, Scotland, is a legendary restaurant and café that is regarded as one of the most well-known landmarks in the region, deeply rooted in the history of the town. Originally founded in 1935 by the Italian immigrant family Nardini, it represents a unique fusion of traditional British and Italian cuisine, particularly famous for its award-winning fish and chips and homemade ice creams. After an extensive multimillion-pound renovation, the establishment reopened in December 2008, with the iconic Art Deco building restored to its former glory, enhanced by modern accents. Situated on the coast, it offers an unparalleled view of the Firth of Clyde and has become an essential stop for visitors taking a trip "doon the water" – a Scottish term for a journey to the seaside.

Traditional British and Italian cuisine

The atmosphere at "Nardini's" is a successful blend of nostalgia and contemporary flair. The interior of the 200-seat café impresses with its elegant Art Deco aesthetic, characterized by clean lines, large windows, and a bright, open design that highlights the coastal views. On weekends, a pianist provides live music, ranging from classics to modern pieces, enhancing the relaxed yet vibrant ambiance. The furnishings are both stylish and functional, with an open kitchen that allows guests to watch the food preparation and an ice cream counter that becomes the focal point of the establishment. Particularly during peak season or on sunny days, the café fills up quickly, reflecting its popularity as a meeting place for all generations.

Unique ice cream flavors in Largs

Culinary-wise, "Nardini's" is a paradise for lovers of British and Italian specialties. The flagship dish is undoubtedly the fish and chips, freshly fried to order and prepared to the award-winning standard of director Sep Marini – a dish that sets the benchmark with its crispy batter and perfectly salted chips. Equally impressive is the "Clyde Coast Extravaganza," a monumental ice cream dessert featuring twelve scoops and sixteen toppings, which is not just a treat but also an experience for groups. For those with a sweet tooth, the "Double Cream Vanilla" stands out, a classic ice cream made with fresh Scottish milk and cream, known for its creamy texture. The Italian pastries, such as the homemade Millefoglie, are also a delight, showcasing the artisanal care that goes into every bite at the adjacent bakery.

Historic restaurant in Scotland

The beverage selection is equally diverse and distinguished by its quality. "Nardini's" takes particular pride in its exclusive coffee blend, an aromatic medium roast served in the café and available for takeaway – a perfect companion to the sweet treats. The cocktail menu adds a modern twist, while traditional soft drinks and milkshakes made with the homemade ice creams are popular among younger guests. The ice cream selection includes innovative flavors like "Scottish Tablet" or "Peach and Passionfruit Cheesecake," demonstrating how the restaurant combines tradition with creativity while always prioritizing freshness.

Renovation of Art Deco building

The service is often described as first-class, with staff striving to provide guests with a special experience. However, on busy days, there may be wait times, and some visitors have noted the hustle or occasional inconsistencies with orders. Nevertheless, satisfaction prevails, and the team shows flexibility, such as accommodating dishes for special dietary needs. "Nardini's" is also known for its historical significance: during World War II, it served as a cultural gathering place, providing entertainment despite the challenging times, even as the family's Italian roots posed difficulties during that period.

The restaurant is an integral part of the community in Largs, attracting visitors from around the world who seek the best of British and Italian cuisine in a unique setting. It appeals to a wide audience – from families to couples to groups celebrating special occasions. The option to purchase ice cream and pastries for takeaway further enhances its versatility. Despite occasional critiques regarding cleanliness or service speed, "Nardini's" remains a place that stands for quality and tradition.

Battered haddock and chips at Nardini's is the food of choice when visiting Largs. Especially when it's still chilly outside and you can watch the choppy sea from the comfort and warmth of the restaurant.

Came in for cuppa coffee ☕ being coming Nardinis since young girl when I stayed with my grandparents in Largs. Customer service was awful by waitress we walked out disgusted. Never again. My late papa used play piano occasionally at Nardinis.

This remains a destination for me whenever up in Scotland visiting family! The best sundaes ever! I think my sister won the prize for travelling the furthest for an ice cream sundae that day - 6,000 miles from California! Sadly, we were up in Scotland for a family funeral, so when the photo was taken of us all, there was at least one face missing. God Bless you Uncle Dave

We had the classic fish and chips and it was great! Despite how busy the place was the service was quick and friendly. The only thing that let it down slightly for me personally was…it’s a lovely 1930s art deco restaurant with period correct furniture and fittings…but playing modern pop music just didn’t really suit the environment. But tbf if the only thing I can complain about it the background music then is shows that this place is very much worth visiting, I’ll definitely be back!

Wow, once an institution and world renowned cafe... What has it become. Queuing to get in when the restaurant is 60% full. Slow service and you have to try and flag down someone. Wrong dishes and the soup was cold. Carpets look are disgusting and you stick when waking across them. Urinal leaking in the men's bathroom. Not value for money versus the food and level of service. Lots of other places in largs. Avoid at all costs.

We had a good meal, s tarters were really big, and I don't think I chose well for my main meal, I had spaghetti Bolognese which wasn't hot and really tasted too much like tomatoes, no herbs to give it the nice Italian Bolognese taste. The staff were very nice and the service was very good.

Took my 97 year old mum for last lunch there. Lunch was best ever, got take away strawberry tarts, because they are the best. On the way out, mum had an issue in the toilet, the staff were extremely helpful and very kind. I can not thank nardine's enough, staff today where a credit to your business.

The ice cream 'flavour' is only in the top layer. I looked at all the flavours and noticed this. So if it is scooped without catching the top layer you have just got plain ice cream. I ordered 2 scoops - 1 x nutella, 1 x rolo. It tasted like 2 identical mediocre chocolate ice creams, could not tell the difference between them. The rolo was meant to have toffee swirled in it, but I got none as it was only on the top layer. I asked to add toffee sauce and dime bar pieces (as part of a 2 scoop 'sundae' costing extra e.g. the toffee sauce was £1.50 extra, but really the rolo ice cream should have had toffee in it in the first place). So it was delicious in the end, but the ice cream on it's own was very disappointing. All the other flavours look like they have the same issue. Don't think they care as they make a fortune.

Nice enough place in a good location on the sea front. A bit pricey, but you’re also paying for that location I guess. A bit art deco style, nicely done, does good ice cream and there is usually plenty of pay parking across the road.

This is a superb café to visit. Very pleasant service, efficient staff. I do recommend it. Only thing I very much dislike is a service charge is automatically added and not advised when presenting the bill. One is felt compelled to pay the service charge and I resent the practice. It's my choice to tip or not and at what amount.

Largs, in general, is a like a magical place. After a 26km hike through the majestic mountains and enjoying the breathtaking scenery, I popped in at Nardinis. At 1st, I was feeling a bit intimidated and underdressed. Dirty shoes and cargo pants. I'm glad to say that the judgment was only in my head. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was welcoming, the portions were generous enough, and the price was worth every bite.

Mid-morning dive in for a cuppa and an ice cream. So, it was a bit quiet. Looking a bit tired on the outside, but fantastic on the inside. And the ice-cream? The liquorice one is sublime!
